Sunday Evenings
Even though, I'm a stay at home mom, I'm still a stickler for having my kids prepare their items for school the night before. Well, in my mind I am. Sure, I could get all of their items ready, but I feel it's important for them to become responsible for their own belongings. I begin thinking on Friday that come Sunday night before they go to sleep, I want them to have their books by the door, clothes laid out for the next day and all folders/papers neatly organized and signed if necessary. But, here it is again - another Sunday night and none of the above are done. I don't really think of this task until they're fast asleep in bed and I'm starting to think of the next day's chores. Then, I ask myself, Is it really that important? It doesn't take that long to get these things done in the morning. In a word - YES. My kids are in 6th and 2nd grade. Both are intelligent and loving souls and I'm proud of who they are. However, I believe that this generation is falling into a trap of entitlement; my kids, included. That someone will always be there to get them what they need, or pick up for them when they were either a) lazy, b) forgot, or c) couldn't find it. It's a heck of a lot easier to get these items for them. And it's a lot quieter! But, it doesn't service them, nor, teach them responsibility for themselves. So, tomorrow morning our house will become a mini cyclone as the kids rush to get themselves prepared for school; looking for a book, a shoe, or a part of their uniform. I believe this will be a topic of discussion tomorrow night at dinner - the training of being prepared. Hopefully, this will be the last Sunday night I have to give this so much thought. . . . . . .stay tuned.
